AIM, also known as AOL Instant Messenger, is an application with a long history that has seen it go from market share leader to virtual unknown. It was widely used for the first ten years after it was launched, although a Mac version was only released in 2008. By then, the decline had already begun, as users had started switching to social networking websites or other instant messaging apps. The application has not managed to recover its user base since then, but some new features have been added in an effort to integrate more popular social networking platforms.
